Weekly Writing Prompts #4 – Step Into Uncertainty – Kai Adia

Welcome to the writing club! This week’s prompt is all about recognizing the good when situations seem uncertain. From experience, I know that these situations are pushing you to make a decision to ultimately grow. I recently left a work situation to strike out on my own and I feel energized and boundlessly creative. I chose to make a decision and believe in my ability to create positive situations in my life. I’ve stepped into uncertainty because deep down I know that I can find a work environment more fitting my lifestyle. Therefore, you can’t be afraid of taking that step out of your comfort zone and into the unknown. The unknown is deliciously daunting and exciting!

What to think about during this week’s writing exercises is how can you write in an unexpected and different way. What is something in the writing process that scares you just a little? Also, if you are here to journal, is it time to acknowledge something you’ve been ignoring? Let’s dive in!

You have to get outside of your comfort zone if you’re going to make significant changes in your life, and since few things scare people like the unknown, feeling fear is an excellent sign that you’re on the right track.

― Jen Sincero

Take the advice of the author behind You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Lifefacing the unknown can change your whole perception of life. Risk taking is different than being risky. Write down three (or more) thoughts came to mind after reading this quote. If you had a flash of a thought where you’re doing the thing in your life that you constantly say you can’t do, write that down! Also, how’s the journey been so far? Reflect on the past year or moments since the new year began.

When have you felt afraid to do something and you did it anyway?

I think we have all felt fear, even irrational doubt, at some point in our lives. Therefore, now is the perfect time to explore that situation and reflect on the outcome. What happened and did you change in some way? The situation can be as small as getting on a scary rollercoaster or stepping up to the stage at an open mic night to share your poetry or a song. The situation can be completely different as well.

What’s most important is sitting with the moment, no matter if it was a “good” or “bad” and jotting down any thoughts around the subject. If the outcome of the situation was an avalanche of applause, a moment of ecstatic laughter hold that feeling in your heart and mark it in your journal. It can be a reminder of how courageous you are. Courageous enough to try something and step into uncertainty. If the situation turned out to be embarrassing or you felt ashamed, write it too so that you can forgive yourself and let it go. You still tried!

The door shut behind her. Window shades swiftly closed at the sight of her.

She would have to face the beast alone.

How is the character feeling at this moment? What’s running through her mind? And most importantly, what happens? You have the choice to expand this prompt in any direction. Write it down!

That’s it for this weeks writing prompt. Also, share in the comments an idea you had and how you feel about the writing prompts. More prompts to ponder and write about are coming soon. Stay tuned!
