Social Justice & Virtual Reality: ‘World Trust’ Is Making It Happen!

Big things are happening in Oakland! I’m not talking about the Golden State Warriors’ championship parade. I’m talking about cutting-edge Virtual Reality. Have you ever wanted to step into someone else’s shoes or see through someone else’s eyes? Virtual Reality seems to be the closest pathway to such an experience. I’m glad to share that the powerful potential of this technology is being used to support healing and empathy (). Saturday, June 16th, 2018, the World Trust Organization will host the Beyond Imagining: A Virtual Experience of Justice and Healing event at the Oakland Museum of California.

World Trust, also known as World Trust Educational Services, Inc., is a nonprofit that produces films, curricula, workshops, and programs grounded in diversity and racial equity. The organization promotes institutional, structural and cultural change. The Founder & President of the World Trust, Dr. Shakti Butler, and the World Trust team are taking all of this knowledge further by showcasing their first VR film at the event Saturday, June 16th, 2018.

The combination of filmmaking and Virtual Reality to evoke compassion is groundbreaking, and this is only the beginning! The event is a fundraiser and it will be an interactive experience of Virtual Reality demonstrations by Light Sail VR  and MURSION (R), a screening of World Trust ‘s latest film “Healing Justice”with facilitated dialogues, community building, and networking.

“Virtual Reality has massive potential to interrupt bias narratives while offering powerful strategies for societal change. Although commonly used as a distraction away from justice, VR can spark healing and change beyond our re-imagining,” said Dr. Shakti Butler.

Dr. Butler is a dynamic woman! Not only is she the founder of World Trust, Butler is a filmmaker and facilitator. Dr. Butler served as the diversity consultant and advisor on the outstanding Disney film, Zootopia. If you’ve seen the animated film, you know how it highlights diversity and inclusion while addressing issues like implicit bias. So, Shakti knows what she is doing!  Butler’s work is about “whole body learning” through stories, art, movement, and dialogue. I just love that she is putting her ideals into practice by being on the cutting edge of Virtual Reality and film. I will definitely be following Dr. Shakti Butler and the World Trust for whatever they do next.

Social justice has a new platform and it’s Virtual Reality with World Trust!
