Season of the Witch: TV Shows To Binge Watch

Everywhere I look it seems like a new show about witches is popping up and I couldn’t be more excited. Witches are my default Halloween costume because nearly all things witches intrigues me. I love how writers, filmmakers and creators alike expand and add to the magical lore of witches. So get ready to fire up your Netflix because there are perfect witchy shows to settle in and binge-watch.

1. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Talk about an amazing remake! The Netflix series has an outstanding score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and the rating is well deserved. The storytelling is so fun and well executed! I definitely remember watching Sabrina The Teenage Witch when I was a kid. I appreciate where this Netflix series has dared to go, building off the childhood show and comic series. It reminds me of a Tim Burton production in setting and with a tone that’s a little creepy but somehow heartwarming at the same time. The show delves into the witch world, sharing a distinctive culture, addressing issues like patriarchy and free will. Although its a teenage melodrama mixed with horror, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina shines at challenging religious rituals and cultural norms. Overall, it’s darker tone well with strong characters you instantly care about like Sabrina of course, and her cousin Ambrose and aunt Hilda.

The perfect episodes with the right amount of creepy this Halloween season are episodes 5 Dreams In A Witch House and episode 6 An Exorcism in Greendale. Both episodes showcase some nasty demons and awesome spellcasting. I especially liked that in the  An Exorcism in Greendale episode, Sabrina calls out the names of some notorious women thought to be witches including New Orleans’ Marie Lavaeu.  I can’t wait to finish the series and I hope more people tune in!

2. A Discovery Of Witches

More magic coming in hot with this SkyOne series! Do you want strong female characters, vampires, and romance with your witchy stories? Well, A Discovery of Witches has all of that and more. Based off a novel of the same name by Deborah Harkness, the show takes its liberties sharing the forbidden love story between a witch, Diana Bishop, and vampire, Mattew Clairmont. I think of it as a well researched and more mature version of Twilight. Diana is powerful in her own right even as she discovers who she is as a witch. The lore feels unique as many of the ‘creatures’ (vampires, witches, and demons) are intellectuals navigating the human world around them. That is a part of the show that definitely intrigues me along with the broader questions addressed such as prejudice, equality.

There are plenty of episodes to binge watch so I highly suggest catching up on the show before the finale.

Now, this show is one to keep on your radar. As a witch series to come, think of it as a way to keep the season of the witch brewing. I’m definitely excited to check it out once it’s released on Netflix. The show follows a 19-year-old Afro-Colombian witch named Carmen who time travels to the future from 1649 Cartenega. She is burned at the stake and finds herself emerging from the ocean in the future. She’ll have to adjust to the techy-future and I can’t wait to see her try.
