As a Black woman, my hair is a symbol of pride, self-expression and creativity. Black hair is so unique, defining itself with varying curl patterns and textures which we add our own flare to with color and style. Over the years as the natural hair movement has taken off, it’s been amazing to see more and more Black-owned natural hair brands emerging to claim the lucrative market such as CurlyChic, Pattern by Tracee Ellis Ross, and Sienna Naturals co-owned by Hannah Diop and Issa Rae.
Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to get a first look at an empowering collection of photography honoring 101 Black women and their natural hair journeys. The collection, My Beautiful Black Hair: 101 Natural Hair Stories from the Sisterhood, is the debut photography book by St. Clair Detrick-Jules.

Although many of us would have welcomed time off from our jobs and daily life a few weeks ago, I’m sure we didn’t expect to be stuck at home due to a global pandemic. Since COVID-19 has caused such a shift in our culture, I’ve felt the need to focus on a particular unifying practice that can calm anxieties during this trying time. We all, in some form, have to maintain our hair.
Whenever it was time to braid my hair or grease my scalp, I remember sitting on a pillow in my living room while my mom tugged a comb through my hair. Every Black girl has had a moment like this in their lives because it’s a rite of passage. Being able to style our curly hair is a symbol of true self-expression, and it’s a moment of bonding when we need a little help with our hairstyles.
