In my discussion of HBO’s I May Destroy You by Michaela Coel, I explore how the show tackles modern dating and consent. Michaela is a creative genius who wrote a timely show that manages sensitive subjects while still being funny and highly immersive. I talk about a family of odd timeline disruptors in The Umbrella Academy 2. These adoptees with superpowers undergo massive changes when they’re dropped into the 60s era, an age of conspiracies, racial tension, and much more. Each character has such an interesting arch, yet I focus a good portion on Allison Hargreeves, a modern Black woman dropped into this time period. I call the episode “Allison’s Version of ‘Outlander’…” because, like Claire who’s dropped into a time period vastly different from her own, Allison has to learn how to navigate.
