Is Netflix’s ‘Someone Great’ The POC Rom-Com We’ve Been Looking For?
There are too many good actors and comedians in Someone Great to just ignore this upcoming Netflix film. It’s understandable if some people seeing the new trailer have reserved feelings since Gina Rodriguez is the main character. I have always loved Jane The Virgin yet the actress does have a history of anti-Black sentiments that have me questioning supporting her. Her opinions are well-known in the Twittersphere. Even so, the trailer for Netflix’s Someone Great seems more than promising with the star-studded supporting cast that I am willing to watch.Â
The Actors You’ll Love
Someone Great will air April 19th and LeKeith Stanfield, DeWanda Wise, and comedian Michelle Buteau are making their rounds in another Netflix production. Seeing these stellar actors is just enough to want the film to be the friendship, girls-night-in hang out flick. With a predominately POC cast, I’m excited to see a story about our millennial experience of growing up and facing inevitable moments like a break-up. Stanfield played a lovable ex in The Incredible Jessica James, while DeWanda Wise held her own as the leading lady of She’s Gotta Have It.  They were both complex and refreshing characters in other Netflix productions.
I am especially excited to see one of my favorite, bold, self-loving, and outlandish comedians Michelle Buteau. If you don’t know, she has a hilarious podcast called Late Night Whenever. Her podcast keeps me laughing even if it’s my fifth time listening in. Buteau made a standout appearance in Netflix’s The Comedy Lineup. RuPaul, Rosario Dawson and many others will grace the screen as well.
The film could be a way to make Gina Rodriguez look favorable and inclusive. I am very much aware of this and I’m choosing to support POC rom-coms and the badass actors I mentioned above. It would be great for Rodriguez to work out her sentiments, but that is up to her. The film has all the millennial-trying-to-make-it with the friendship vibes we love. I hope it is on par with Netflix hits like To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and The Incredible Jessica James.
Someone Great was written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. I can’t help being happy to see a women behind the camera. Female directors for the win! The film was also produced by Paul Feig, the man behind Bridesmaids and the revamped Ghostbusters. I’m here for the positive male support in the film industry as well!Â
